A bit of history
ADANA (the Association for the Rights of Abandoned Animals) was founded in 1989 by a bunch of animal lovers concerned about abandoned dogs in Estepona (Málaga, Spain). They managed to install some kennels near the abattoir and some years later, in 1997, they moved into a building owned by the local government in Los Pedregales Park. This used to be a goat shed, and moving in there was a temporary measure. But years passed, the number of animals grew and ADANA continued to have the kennels there.
At the same time, ADANA realised this temporary occupation (however long it could be) was not ideal for the future and the security of the organisation, so they worked hard to be able to aquire a piece of land. The objective: to build their own kennels, the ADANA Sanctuary. Eventually, this dream started to look like a reality and after some time ADANA owned a plot in a nearby area. In 2008 the construction work for the sanctuary started. Very exciting!
Given that the construction is funded only by donations, the works are done at a slow pace. But ADANA hopes their Santuary to be complete relatively soon and provide a better future for the association, which means a better future for the animals.
Meanwhile, ADANA continues using the kennels that belong to Estepona Council, which have been recently refurbished. However, it is ADANA who operates the dog shelter and no government money funds this work.
